Pelvic Health Physical Therapy FAQs:
What It Is, How It Works, and Other Common Questions
What is pelvic health physical therapy?
Pelvic health physical therapy is a specialized branch of physical therapy that focuses on the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disorders affecting the pelvic floor—that "sling" of muscles inside your pelvis holding the pelvic organs in place and supporting digestive and reproductive function.
Who is pelvic health physical therapy for?
Pelvic health physical therapy is for men and women struggling with signs and symptoms of pelvic floor dysfunction, including low back pain, groin pain, pelvic pain, diastasis recti (ab separation), urinary incontinence, postpartum pain, pelvic organ prolapse, and more.

Pelvic health PT can help even if you have no pain at all and simply want to correct core and pelvic floor weakness, or if you want to avoid future problems by taking a preventive approach (we’re looking at you, moms-to-be).
How does pelvic health physical therapy work?
Pelvic health physical therapy can only be provided by a licensed physical therapist with advanced training in women's health and pelvic health. Our sessions typically begin with a thorough personal history, an external and internal assessment of the pelvic floor, and additional physical examination tests as needed, including postural screenings, core muscle strength testing, and breathing assessments.

Based on our findings, our pelvic health physical therapist will devise a customized plan of care for you based on your unique needs and goals. You'll leave your sessions with a clearer understanding of why you are dealing with your issue and what you can do about it. You will also get specific home exercises that are tailored to you, so you'll be ready to take action toward a healthier body on Day 1!

Is it private?
Yes. We provide all our pelvic health physical therapy sessions in private treatment rooms to ensure your comfort and privacy. We also have easy access to our larger gym space and equipment, so we'll have everything we need to help you get stronger and back to your old life.

Will it take a long time?
Because everybody—and every body—is so unique, our Washington DC physical therapy team doesn't offer generic treatment plans or protocols. This means everyone needs a different amount of time to achieve their goals. Most of our clients leave the first session saying they feel better already, and always leave with a greater understanding of why they are dealing with their issue and how to get better.

Can I come if I have my period?
Yes, you can come to your pelvic health PT appointment if you are on your period; it's really about whatever you are comfortable with. Our sessions are beneficial at any and every point in your menstrual cycle.

Can I bring my kid?
Please do! Parents and caregivers are welcome to bring their kids to our physical therapy studio in DC. We recognize how challenging your schedule can be and want to make it as convenient as possible for you to get the care you need. Plus, we love meeting your children!

How is pelvic health physical therapy different from the services I get from my gynecologist?
A pelvic health physical therapist and a gynecologist are both valuable women's health providers, but they have very different focuses and areas of expertise.

Unlike an OB/GYN, who focuses on the female reproductive system and internal organs, our pelvic health physical therapists specialize in functional movement, muscle strength and coordination, flexibility, core stability, and other factors contributing to pelvic floor issues. Pelvic health physical therapists also work with men, women, and people of all backgrounds, and not just individuals with female reproductive systems.
